It’s reported that despite no official announcement, Winstone may become Dr Jones latest sidekick in the blockbuster film opening in cinemas May 2008.

Harrison Ford has already signed up for the lead role in the fourth instalment with respected actress Cate Blanchett set to perform alongside him.

50-year-old Winstone has rapidly gained well earnt recognition for his performances having made the huge step up from television drama to action movies in 2004 picture King Arthur.

King Arthur director Antoine Fuqua labelled Winstone as “the British De Niro,” a feature that Oscar winning director recognised for Winstone’s role as Mr French in the 2006 crime thriller, The Departed.

His performance as an enforcer to Jack Nicholson’s Boston Mob proved that Winstone was capable of transferring his serious Emmy award winning performances in Vincent, onto the big screen.

It’s believed that director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas had been developing ideas for the latest edition of the Indiana Jones stories for over a decade before finally approving a script for the continuation of Dr Jones’ adventures late last year.

The movie has yet to be named but has a working title of Indiana Jones 4. Shooting begins this summer but Lucas revealed earlier this year that it will be a “character piece” including some “very interesting mysteries.”

The world was introduced to the investigative archaeologist back in 1981 in Raiders of the Lost Ark before two feature film sequels followed, The Temple Of Doom and The Last Crusade, raking in a huge $1.1 billion at the box office.

64-year-old Harrison Ford stated last year that he would “bring the same physical action” to the fourth film as he did in the original trilogy when he last played the Jones Role in 1989.

Should Winstone accept the role, it will continue his extraordinary rise and acceptance into the Hollywood circle. His next venture is the lead role in Robert Zemeckis’s forthcoming version of Beowulf, out later this year.
